Why January and February are the best months to get a job
-
Many people apply to jobs with the same intensity throughout the year, with the exception around the holidays, but as someone who's worked at numerous companies hiring hundreds of people, let me explain why January and February are so important in your job search.
Most companies' fiscal calendar end on 12/31, that means two things:
- Hiring managers wanting to add headcount have to wait for the new year to get budgets released. When the headcount approvals are official, they can start working with to HR to post jobs. But why compete with 1000 other people for the same job?
Polish your LinkedIn profile, then proactively reaching out to possible hiring managers on LinkedIn with a simple message of "in case you have plans to hire for position X, I'd love to speak with you now to get ahead of the curve."
- Managers often let go underperformers by 12/31, which means they have backfill headcount in the new year. It's another great reason to be aggressively reaching out to managers on LinkedIn, as well as posting so your network can make referrals for you.
In my long career, I would say 30-40% of jobs for the year were filled in January and February. If you are still relaxing from the holidays, get off your duff and start networking and applying.
Hirecarta can not only write resumes, but in the "Networking" tab, it can write LinkedIn messages for you.
What else are YOU doing this January to get a new job?

@admin All great information that I just learned. I had no idea that there was a hiring quota to fulfill or a hiring period.

@xaviergarcia A small startup might hire fairly evenly as they grow, but more established companies definitely group them closer toward the beginning of their fiscal year, and sometimes after halfway through the year when they evaluate company performance against revenue/profit targets.
